A 50kw solar panel array installation, project managed by NPS, is helping South Lakeland District Council to lead the way locally in the use of renewable energy.
NPS designed, specified and procured the scheme and then project managed the work, which saw the solar panels installed to the roof of their headquarters, South Lakeland House.
The panels are set to save 324 tonnes of CO² over their 20 year lifespan and save the authority an estimated £122,000, with the cost of installing the panels being recouped within nine years.
By installing the solar panels to its own building, the council hopes this will set an example and inspire other organisations, such as housing associations and developers to do the same on to affordable homes being built in the district. Examples of where this has already happened include the recently completed affordable housing development at Windermere Road, Kendal and 10 new affordable homes at Kirkby Lonsdale, both designed by NPS, where all properties utilise solar panels.
