New swimming pool to be designed by NPS

Our Castleford office has been commissioned by Wakefield Council as the lead design consultant for a proposed new swimming pool in Wakefield’s city centre.

The new facility has now been granted full planning permission and given the name ‘Wakefield One’, after a panel chose it as their preferred option from ideas sent in by residents across the district.

Wakefield Council identified the need to provide a swimming and fitness facility on the site of the former public swimming pool that was demolished in 2007. The objectives of the scheme are to provide a facility which can be used for Short Course Championship swimming events and to create a hub and destination facility.

The new pool will become a regional resource for swimming, with health and fitness facilities. Designed in compliance with relevant guidance issued by Sport England, Amateur Swimming association (ASA) and other sports related guidance, the building will be sustainable and endeavour to achieve a ‘very good’ BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating.

The facility, which has a total project budget of approx £10m, is expected to start on site early next Spring. It will compliment the new Trinity Walk retail development currently under construction.

Cllr David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for sport, said: "This is a major step forward in our plans for a new swimming and fitness centre in Wakefield city centre. I am delighted with the pool's new name. Wakefield One sums it up for me, as this will be one fantastic facility for everyone to enjoy and benefit from.”
