Building Surveyor
Background
I joined NPS in 2003, via TUPE transfer into the Hampton Court office. My initial role was an office administrator, but I also had the chance to work with building surveyors on report writing and site surveys. I enjoyed that side of the job so much, I decided on a career change to become a building surveyor myself. NPS have supported me through a five year BSc degree course in Building Surveying, on a part-time day-release basis.
What do you do?
As a Building Surveyor I mainly provide expertise for the Bereavement Service section of our local authority, Kingston Council. The nature of the service makes it a delicate area to deal with at times, but I’m working with good people. Experiencing a varying range of challenges has kept my interest, and not doubt will continue to in the future.
Since beginning my degree course, I have been given an active role in the surveying team. It has been really valuable in helping me to understand and apply what I have been learning at university. It’s also helped me to build a good working relationship with our client. I am due to go on maternity leave soon, but I will be returning in order to further progress my career and become a Chartered Surveyor.
Why NPS?
Although it has sometimes been difficult to balance my personal life with work and university, I can confidently say that I have received all the support I have needed from co-workers and management. The Hampton Court office has a real ‘family feel’ to it, and we always pull together to get the job done.
