Sustainability Consultant
Background
I graduated in 2001 with an honours degree in Technology and Management, before gaining a masters degree in Phase Change Materials for Thermal Storage in Buildings. At the moment I am working towards my PhD in Development of an Innovative Wall-lining for Buildings Incorporating Phase Change Materials. I joined John Packer Associates (JPA) as a sustainability consultant in 2006, and the company became part of NPS Group shortly afterwards.
What do you do?
I head up a dynamic sustainability team, which is unique within a building services consultancy of our size. We use specialist thermal modelling software to model the thermal performance of buildings. It enables us to demonstrate the energy improvements that can be achieved with different building forms, orientation and constructions. We aim to optimise natural ventilation, to maintain a comfortable temperature while eliminating the need for air conditioning plant. Our work also includes evaluating the impact of new developments on existing buildings by calculating the daylight, sunlight and overshadowing both with and without the proposed development. This is often vital when submitting a planning application.
Why NPS?
As part of the NPS Group, I contribute to the sustainability of diverse design projects across the country. My team has grown organically since I joined, responding to the strong demand for our skills, which is a positive reflection on the construction industry. We pride ourselves in having a track record of sustainable building design, along with the latest specialist services to ensure low energy buildings are realised.
